Search in progress for new president

The search is underway for a new president. When the fall 2002 semester starts, students and faculty will see a familiar face from the past in the president’s office.

Dr. Fred Williams resigned this summer due to health problems, and Dr. Bud Joyner was named as an interim president until Amarillo College finds a new president. Joyner was president of AC from 1992 to 1999.

“It was just natural that they picked me because I had seven years’ previous experience and know what to do,” Joyner said.

The process of interviewing and finding a new president may take up to six months.

Applications will start being accepted Oct. 21, and then candidates who meet the qualifications will be chosen.

Some of the qualifications for the presidency are that they must have a doctorate at an accredited college and have at least five years of administrative experience at a college.

Some students have other ideas on what should be done about a new president. “I thought that is why there is a vice president, so they could take over in such situations like this,” said Tosha Simpson, a general education major.

“I think that Mr. Joyner should just stay in office,” said Richard Lizama, a mass communications major. “He knows what he is doing already, and it would just save a lot of time for everyone.”

Joyner said he expects to see a new president in office by February.
