Tobacco Free Amarillo is in the process of developing new ways to reach out to college students.

TFA asked Amarillo College's STARS (Students to Accept Responsibility Safely) to help with a survey of AC students.

"We wanted to get the thoughts of college students on Tobacco Free Amarillo," said Faye Wilhelm, a TFA representative.

Students were asked seven quick questions that gave TFA an insight into the opinions of smokers and non-smokers on campus. Students were surveyed on their smoking habits, if any, and on programs used to help people quit smoking.

"I think it is a wonderful event, because it involves the students and we get to see their opinions," said Kara Nation, STARS president and an education major. "STARS did this to help get the students aware of tobacco industries."

STARS attracted students to the survey by handing out free snow cones. "The turnout is excellent -- better than we ever expected," Nation said.

Students, faculty and staff participated in the survey.

"I think it's a good idea. It made me think of things I've never thought of before," said Jan Pearcy, administrative assistant in the dean of student services office. "It's not telling people to quit smoking. It's telling them about their health."

Tobacco Free Amarillo offers various ways to help people stop smoking. TFA offers sensation programs, service opportunities, counseling and several kinds of literature.
