Tarpon
(Megalops atlanticus)

Tarpon are large, silvery fishes with a darker, greenish back.

Their known range is from Nova Scotia to Brazil.

Tarpon in the 34kg to 59kg class are frequent. Though usually slow and cunning, tarpon are voracious fish eaters. They lumber lazily in their forage areas, but strike like lighting when the prey is chosen.

Relatively little is known of the life history of the tarpon. The species spawns offshore in late spring and summer, and the larvae move into less salty or fresh water.
