The ring-necked pheasant can be found throughout
Europe and southern |Asia. It was introduced into North America from China
and England and now thrives in Canada and most of the United States,
though not in the southern states, where the temperature is too warm.
The male grows to about 91cm long; the female to 64cm
long.
It lives in farmland that has brushy growths of
woodlands nearby for protection. It roosts in orchards, roadside trees, or
marsh reed beds in winter.
A fast runner with strong, noisy, short-distance
flight, this pheasant feeds primarily on grains, seeds, and berries.
