Sable Antelope (Hippotragus niger)

The sable antelope is a handsome member of the antelope family that lives in herds in the forests of southern Africa. It is a graceful animal with an erect mane, long ears, long hair on the throat, and long, parallel, sickle-shaped horns. It stands up to 137cm at the shoulder. The male sable antelope weighs an average of 230kg; the female about 215kg.

The sable antelope is active during the day. It eats grasses and needs to drink water very often.

This antelope prefers open woodlands with medium to tall grass. Usually, it lives in a herd of 10 to 30, but occasionally larger groups are found. The herd shares an area of about 25km. Its worst enemy is the lion.

Sable antelope live from 15 to 20 years.
