DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:
Techniques of advanced principles of modern fencing: FOIL, EPEE, and SABER with emphasis on foil. All intermediate/advanced fencing students are required to be outfitted in full USFA regulation standard uniform and all necessary equipment. Prerequisite: At least two semesters of An Introduction to Fencing or permission of the instructor. The first half of Thursday classes are review of basic techniques and development of the skills of the referee and judge by interaction with beginning fencers during beginning class. The second half of Thursday classes and Saturday classes are advanced training. Amarillo College fencing classes are certified by the United States Fencing Association (USFA).

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:
By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete the listed learning objectives by demonstrating competency through successful demonstration of skills through both judging and refereeing beginners bouts, working in association with armorers, and through United States Fencing Association regulation bouts.

PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OBJECTIVES (MINIMUM COMPETENCIES)

  1. Define and demonstrate proper fencing form and walking with association to the lunge and ballestra.
  2. Define and demonstrate the names, positions, and technical applications of the classic foil, epee, and saber guards.
  3. Define and demonstrate the four body quadrants and resulting attacks and parries taken from the classic guard positions.
  4. Define and demonstrate the the techniques of measure, passata soto, displacement, and in quartata.
  5. Define and demonstrate the proper concept of fencing time and the concept of the stop hit.
  6. Define and demonstrate the techniques of the attack au fer, prise au fer, the bind, croise, envelopment, and opposition.
  7. Define and demonstrate the techniques of insistence and trompement.
  8. Define and demonstrate the concept of right of way, parry-counter parry, and riposte-counter riposte.
  9. Define and demonstrate the flick attack, engage, disengage, counter disengage, and change of engagement.
  10. Define and demonstrate the flying parry and riposte, indirect attacks, and the concept of interception.
  11. Define and demonstrate the concepts of preparation, attacks into preparation, redoublement, reprise, and remise.
  12. Define and demonstrate the skills of referee and judge.
  13. Define and demonstrate an understanding of the set rules and regulations of modern sport fencing.
  14. Define and demonstrate the basic skills of the fencing armorer.

General Information and Rules of the Salle

BEHAVIOR IN THE SALLE:
Sportsman like behavior, language, and courtesy are required of all persons entering the Salle as students and spectators. Violation of such behavior, language, or courtesy will result in IMMEDIATE EXPULSION from the Salle.

DRESS CODE REGULATIONS:
All students participating will present themselves in full regulation USAF uniform including knickers, knee socks, under arm protector, jacket, lame, glove, and mask. All other equipment including weapons, body cords, etc. will be approved USFA regulation materials.
