DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:
Instruction in the history and techniques of basic principles of modern fencing: FOIL, EPEE, and SABER with emphasis on foil. Amarillo College fencing classes are certified by the United States Fencing Association (USFA). All equipment for beginning students is provided by Amarillo College.

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:
By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete the listed learning objectives by demonstrating competency through successful bouting and participation in the end of semester in-class tournament.

PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OBJECTIVES (MINIMUM COMPETENCIES)

  1. Define and discuss the basic history of the art of fencing.
  2. Define and discuss the basic safety requirements for fencing.
  3. Define and demonstrate basic pre-fencing warmup and stretching techniques.
  4. Define and demonstrate basic fencing rules and regulations as set by the USFA.
  5. Define and discuss the differences between non-electronic and electronic fencing.
  6. Define and demonstrate the regulation actions of referees and judges.
  7. Define and demonstrate the concepts of fencing footwork, balance, and distance.
  8. Define and demonstrate the proper guard positions for the foil, saber, and epee.
  9. Define and demonstrate the target areas for foil, saber, and epee.
  10. Define and demonstrate the techniques of fencing order of arms.
  11. Define and demonstrate the proper application of attack, parry, and riposte.
  12. Define and demonstrate the techniques of the feint and beating attack.
  13. Define and demonstrate the techniques of the fleche, French bounce, and flick attack.
  14. Define and discuss national and international regulation of fencing.

General Information and Rules of the Fencing Salle

BEHAVIOR IN THE SALLE:
Sportsman like behavior, language, and courtesy are required of all persons entering the Salle as students and spectators. Violation of such behavior, language, or courtesy will result in IMMEDIATE EXPULSION from the Salle.

DRESS CODE REGULATIONS:
All students participating in fencing classes will be responsible to be attired in either regulation fencing uniform or sweats (No shorts are allowed during fencing practice). Shoes will be tennis shoes with non-marking soles. Shirt tails will be tucked in.

BEGINNING IN-CLASS TOURNAMENT PARTICIPATION:
The in-class fencing tournament occurs during the last three weeks of the semester. Trophies will be awarded for first, second, and third places. The tournament will be run by the instructor/head coach, teaching staff, and advanced level fencers. It will be conducted according to strict adherence to United States Fencing Association rules and regulations.
