COURSE SYLLABUS ESL 0345

 

COURSE NAME/NUMBER/TITLEESL 0345, Grammar & Composition IV

 

 

 

HOURS:        Five (5) hours of class and one (1) hour of lab per week.  Additional time outside of class will be necessary to complete assignments.

 

 

SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS:  Three (3) semester hours, institutional credit.

 

 

DISABILITY STATEMENT:

 

Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact ACcessibility Services (SSC125) Phone 371-5436 as soon as possible.

                                     

 

REQUIRED EXAMINATIONS:      Written and oral examinations evaluating writing skills and application of grammar rules.  A final exam is required.

 

 

PREREQUISITE:    Completion of ESL 0335, Composition III, with a grade of C or better or approval of ESL faculty.

 

 

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:      Improve skills in expository writing of longer compositions. Emphasis on complex sentence structure, proper tense sequence, expanded paragraph development, and logical thinking. 

 

 

TEXTBOOK:                        Basic Composition for ESL by Huizenga         

 

 

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:

 

To enable students to write clear, well organized expository compositions of one to   five paragraphs. To further develop students' proofreading and revision skills.

 

 

PERFORMANCE /LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

 

1.         Select a topic.

 

2.         Brainstorm, generate ideas.

 

3.         Write a topic or thesis sentence.

 

4.         Select supporting details.

 

5.         Organize and arrange ideas and details.

 

6.         Write introductions and conclusions.

 

7.         Learn to proofread and correct organizational and mechanical errors.

 

8.         Revise and re-write a paragraph or essay.

 

 

ATTENDANCE:       Attendance is essential to success in the class; therefore, limit absences to no more than 5 per semester.  Additional absences can affect your final grade in the class.  If you stop attending class and do not formally withdraw, you will receive an F.

 

 

MAKE-UP POLICY:            Make-up tests will not be given.  If you miss one test, the grades you have will be averaged with no penalty.  If you miss more than one test, you will receive a 0 for the test missed.

 

 

EVALUATION:         Each student will write a paragraph at the end of the semester.  It will be evaluated by an English teacher. To pass ESL Grammar and Composition IV, the English teacher must indicate on the paragraph that the student is ready to enter Grammar and Writing I.  If the student is not ready for Grammar and Writing I or higher, he or she will be dropped from ESL Grammar and Composition IV and receive a "W" for the course.  If the student is ready for Grammar and Writing I or higher, the following will be used to determine the student's final grade.                                                

 

Objective Examinations                   1/4 of Final Grade

In-class Writings                                1/2 of Final Grade

Final Examination                             1/4 of Final Grade

 

 

GRADING POLICY:            The grading system is:

A = 90-100                                         Excellent

B = 80-89                                           Good

C = 70-79                                           Fair

D = Below 70                                     Failing, must repeat

 

 

If a student or a class does not finish the material needed to complete this level, they will be changed to an audit status.  They will receive a grade of AAU@.  The student will need to enroll in the same level and pay for the classes again the next semester.  This action could cause problems with financial aid.
