COURSE SYLLABUS ESL 0341

 

 

COURSE NAME/NUMBER/TITLE:      ESL 0341 Speaking and Listening IV

 

 

HOURS:        Five (5) hours of class and one (1) hour of lab per week. Additional time outside of class will be necessary to complete assignments.

 

 

SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS:  Three (3) semester hours, institutional credit.

 

 

DISABILITY STATEMENT:

 

Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact ACcessibility Services (SSC125) Phone 371-5436 as soon as possible.

                                   

 

REQUIRED EXAMINATIONS:      Written and oral examinations in class and lab evaluating vocabulary and aural/oral skills.  A final exam is also required.

 

 

PREREQUISITE:    Completion of ESL 0331, Speaking and Listening III, with a grade of C or better or approval of ESL faculty.

 

 

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:      Intensive practice in speaking, listening, and note taking to prepare the advanced ESL student to understand and speak fluent English.

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:

 

To increase students' aural/oral fluency.  To enable students to participate effectively and comfortably in small and large group discussions.  To further develop the students' note taking skills.

 

 

PERFORMANCE /LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

 

1.         Increase pronunciation skills.

 

2.         Increase vocabulary and vocabulary building skills through context.

 

3.         Improve skills in recognizing, understanding, and correctly using common idioms.

 

4.                  Practice discussing current events and issues in small and large group discussions.

 

5.                  Learn to develop and refine notetaking skills.

 

6.         Improve oral/aural skills which will enable the student to comfortably speak to others in and outside of class.

 

 

ATTENDANCE:       Attendance is essential to success in the class; therefore, limit absences to no more than 5 a semester.  Additional absences can affect your final grade in the class.  If you stop attending class and do not formally withdraw, you will receive an F.

 

MAKE-UP POLICY:            Make-up tests will not be given.  If you miss one test, the grades you have will be averaged with no penalty.  If you miss more than one test, you will receive a 0 for the test missed.

 

EVALUATION:         Written and Oral Examinations                                1/2 of Final Grade 

Lab Grade and Participation                                   1/4 of Final Grade

Final Examination                                                     1/4 of Final Grade

 

 

GRADING POLICY:            The grading system is:

 

A = 90-100                             Excellent

B = 80-89                               Good

C = 70-79                               Fair

D = Below 70                         Failing, must repeat

 

If a student or a class does not finish the material needed to complete this level, they will be changed to an audit status.  They will receive a grade of AAU@.  The student will need to enroll in the same level and pay for the classes again the next semester. This action could cause problems with financial aid.

 

 

Please speak English in the classroom at all times.
