COURSE SYLLABUS  ESL 0334

 

 

COURSE NAME/NUMBER/TITLE:   ESL 0334, Reading III

 

 

HOURS:        Five (5) hours of class and one (1) hour of lab per week.  Additional time outside of class will be necessary to complete assignments.

 

 

SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS:     Three (3) semester hours, institutional credit.

 

 

DISABILITY STATEMENT:

 

Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact Accessibility Services (SSC125) Phone 371-5436 as soon as possible.

 

 

REQUIRED EXAMINATIONS:      Written and oral test will be given evaluating vocabulary and comprehension skills.  A final exam is also required.

 

 

PREREQUISITE:    Completion of ESL 0324, Reading II, with a grade of C or better or approval of ESL faculty.

 

 

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:      Emphasis on vocabulary building, word analysis skills, reading comprehension, and dictionary usage.  The lab experience will be individualized.

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:

 

To assist students in improving comprehension skills and increasing vocabulary skills.

 

 

 


PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

 

1.         Develop and expand comprehension skills necessary to understand literal statements found in reading materials and textbooks.

 

2.         Develop and expand comprehension skills necessary to understand thoughts or concepts that are not literal.

       

3.         Develop and expand comprehension skills necessary to identify the main idea of reading selections.

 

4.         Develop and expand vocabulary skills necessary to read and understand written information.  An emphasis will be placed on context clues.   

 

ATTENDANCE:      

 

Attendance is essential to success in the class; therefore, limit absences to no more than 5 a semester.  Additional absences can affect your final grade in the class.  If you stop attending class and do not formally withdraw, you will receive an F.

 

EVALUATION:        

 

Unit Examinations                                                                 1/2 of Final Grade

Homework, lab assignments, and participation                1/4 of Final Grade  

Final Examination                                                                 1/4 of Final Grade

 

MAKE-UP POLICY:           

 

Make-up tests will not be given.  If you miss one test, the grades you have will be averaged with no penalty.  If you miss more than one test, you will receive a 0 for the test missed.

   

GRADING POLICY:            The grading system is:

 

A = 90-100                 Excellent

B = 80-89                   Good

C = 70-79                   Fair

D = 60-69                   Failing

 

If a student or a class does not finish the material needed to complete this level, they will be changed to an audit status.  They will receive a grade of AAU@.  The student will need to enroll in the same level and pay for the classes again the next semester. This action could cause problems with financial aid.
