COURSE SYLLABUS ESL 0332

 

 

COURSE NAME/NUMBER/TITLE:         ESL 0332 Grammatical Structure III

 

 

HOURS:        Five (5) hours of class and one (1) hour of lab per week. Additional time outside of class will be necessary to complete assignments.

 

SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS:    Three (3) semester hours, institutional credit.

 

 

DISABILITY STATEMENT:

REQUIRED EXAMINATION:        Written examinations evaluating knowledge of the most common grammatical errors. A final exam is also required.

 

 

PREREQUISITE:    Completion of ESL 0322, Grammatical Structure II, with a grade of C or better or approval of ESL faculty.

 

 

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:      Emphasis on compound and complex sentence structure.  Build on and review basic grammatical skills.

 

 

TEXTBOOKS:         Exercises in English, Book 7, Loyola University Press

 

 

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:

 

To increase students= ability to communicate clearly through the written and spoken word.  To further develop basic grammatical skills.  To increase students= ability to use compound and complex sentences.

 

 


PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

 

1.         Learn to use the four steps of grammar: prepositional phrases, nouns, verbs, and complements.

 

2.         Master subject - verb agreement.

 

3.         Use compound and complex sentences.

 

4.         Learn to formulate paragraphs and simple compositions in order to present ideas clearly and concisely.

 

5.         Learn to proofread and correct grammatical errors.

 

6.         Increase grammatical skills and the ability to communicate clearly in writing.

 

 

ATTENDANCE:       Attendance is essential to success in the class; therefore, limit absences to no more than 5 a semester.  Additional absences can affect your final grade in the class.  If you stop attending class and do not formally withdraw, you will receive an F.

 

 

EVALUATION:         Unit Examinations                                                     1/2 of Final Grade

In-Class Writings and Participation                        1/4 of Final Grade

Final Examination                                                     1/4 of Final Grade

 

MAKE-UP POLICY:            Make up tests will not be given.  If you miss one test, the grades you have will be averaged with no penalty.  If you miss more than one test, you will receive a 0 for the test missed.

 

GRADING POLICY:            The grading system is:

 

A - 90-100                  Excellent

B - 80-89                    Good

C - 70-79                    Fair

D - Below 70  Failing, must repeat

 

If a student or a class does not finish the material needed to complete this level, they will be changed to an audit status.  The will receive a grade of AAU@.  The student will need to enroll in the same level and pay for the classes again the next semester.  This action could cause problems with financial aid.
