COURSE SYLLABUS ESL 0331

 

 

COURSE NAME/NUMBER/TITLE:         ESL 0331, Speaking & Listening III

 

 

HOURS:        Five (5) hours of class and one (1) hour of lab per week.  Additional time outside of class will be necessary to complete assignments.

 

 

SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS:    Three (3) semester hours, institutional credit.

 

 

DISABILITY STATEMENT:

 

Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact ACcessibility Services (SSC125) Phone 371-5436 as soon as possible.

 

REQUIRED EXAMINATION:        Written and oral examinations in class and lab, evaluating vocabulary and oral/aural skills.  A final exam is also required.

 

PREREQUISITE:    Completion of ESL 0321, Speaking and Listening II, with a grade of C or better or approval of ESL faculty.

 

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

 

Learning to converse at a normal rate of speed through paired and small group practice.  Emphasis on idioms and listening comprehension.

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:

 

To increase students= vocabulary and aural/oral fluency.  To further develop students= abilities in listening comprehension and pronunciation.  To increase students= abilities in recognizing, understanding, and using idioms.  To increase students= ability to understand and take part in English conversations outside of the classroom.

 


 

 

 

PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

 

1.         Increase pronunciation skills.

 

2.         Increase vocabulary and vocabulary building skills through context.

 

3.         Increase skills in recognizing, understanding, and using common idioms.

 

4.         Practice English comprehension at a normal rate of conversation.

 

5.         Improve listening comprehension skills in order to determine the main points of a conversation and/or lecture.

 

6.         Learn to discuss current events in detail.

 

7.                  Learn to better express future plans and goals.

 

 

 

ATTENDANCE:       Attendance is essential to success in the class; therefore, limit absences to no more than 5 per semester.  Additional absences can affect your final grade in the class.  If you stop attending class and do not formally withdraw, you will receive an F.

 

EVALUATION:         Written and Oral Examinations                                1/2 of Final Grade

Lab Grade and Participation                                   1/4 of Final Grade

Final Examination                                                     1/4 of Final Grade

 

MAKE-UP POLICY:            Make up tests will not be given.  If you miss one test, the grades you have will be averaged with no penalty.  If you miss more than one test, you will receive a 0 for the test missed.

 

GRADING POLICY:            The grading system is:

 

A = 90-100                             Excellent

B = 80-89                               Good

C = 70-79                               Fair

D = Below 70                         Failing, must repeat

 

If a student or a class does not finish the material needed to complete this level, they will be changed to an audit status.  They will receive a grade of AAU@.  The student will need to enroll in the same level and pay for the classes again the next semester.  This action could cause problems with financial aid.
