COURSE SYLLABUS ESL 0325
COURSE
NAME/NUMBER/TITLE: ESL 0325, Composition II
HOURS: Five (5) hours of class and one (1)
hour of lab per week. Additional time outside
of class will be necessary to complete assignments.
SEMESTER
CREDIT HOURS: Three (3) semester hours, institutional credit.
DISABILITY
STATEMENT:
Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact Accessibility Services (SSC 125) Phone 371-5436 as soon as possible.
REQUIRED EXAMINATIONS: Written and oral examinations in
class evaluating writing skills and the application of grammar rules. A final exam is also required.
PREREQUISITE: Completion
of ESL 0315, Composition I, with a grade of
C or better or approval of ESL faculty.
DESCRIPTION OF COURSE: Emphasis
on sentence combining, through phrases and clauses, to produce compound and
complex sentences. Practice on unity
and style in paragraph writing.

PURPOSE
AND GOALS OF COURSE:
To enable students to write clear, well-organized sentences. To enable students to use the technique of combining sentences. To enable students to expand sentences through prepositions. To improve grammar and spelling skills.
PERFORMANCE/LEARNING
OBJECTIVES:
1. Write simple
sentences and learn to check for subject-verb agreement.
2. Expand
simple sentences by using details.
3. Learn to
combine simple sentences with conjunctions.
4. Recognize
and use possessives.
5. Learn to
write several sentences on the same subject.
6. Improve
grammar and spelling skills.
ATTENDANCE: Attendance
is essential to success in the class, therefore, limit absences to no more than
5 a semester. Additional absences can
affect your final grade in the class. If
you stop attending class and do not formally withdraw, you will receive an F.
MAKE-UP POLICY: Make-up tests will not be given. If you miss one test, the grades you have
will be averaged with no penalty. If
you miss more than one test, you will receive a 0 for the test
missed.

GRADING
POLICY: The grading
system is:
A = 90-100 Excellent
B = 80-89 Good
C = 70-79 Fair
D = Below 70 Failing, must repeat
If a
student or a class does not finish the material needed to complete this level,
they will be changed to an audit status.
They will receive a grade of AAU@.
The student will need to enroll in the same level and pay for the classes
again the next semester. This action
could cause problems with financial aid.
