COURSE SYLLABUS ESL 0322

 

 

COURSE NAME/NUMBER/TITLE:         ESL 0322,  Grammatical Structure II

 

 

HOURS:        Five (5) hours of class and one (1) hour of lab per week.  Additional time outside of class will be necessary to complete assignments.

 

 

SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS:    Three (3) semester hours, institutional credit.

 

 

DISABILITY STATEMENT:

 

Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact ACcessibility Services (SSC125) Phone 371-5436 as soon as possible.

 

 

REQUIRED EXAMINATION:        Written and oral examinations evaluating knowledge of grammar skills.  A final exam is also required.

 

 

PREREQUISITE:    Completion of ESL 0312, Grammatical Structure I, with a grade of C or better or approval of ESL faculty.

 

 

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:      Grammatical Structure I will build on vocabulary and skills learned in Level I and emphasize practical ideas and idiomatic speech as used in day-to-day life.

 

 

TEXTBOOK:            Exercises in English, Book 4, Loyola University Press

 

 

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:

 

To increase students= ability to communicate clearly through the written and spoken word.  To develop grammar skills beyond basic sentence structure.  To further develop students= ability to write and communicate orally using correct grammar and details.

 


 

PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

 

1.         Expand knowledge of noun and pronoun usage.

 

2.         Expand knowledge of adjective and adverb usage.

 

3.         Identify comparisons and possessives.

 

4.         Expand sentences using details.

 

5.         Learn to combine and expand simple sentences using conjunctions.

 

6.         Expand knowledge of simple mechanics.

 

7.         Learn to proofread and correct basic grammatical errors.

 

 

ATTENDANCE:       Attendance is essential to success in the class; therefore, limit absences to no more than 5 a semester.  Additional absences can affect your final grade in the class.  If you stop attending class and do not formally withdraw, you will receive an F.

 

EVALUATION:         Written Examinations                                               1/2 of Final Grade

            In-Class Writing and Participation                          1/4 of Final Grade

            Final Examination                                                     1/4 of Final Grade

 

MAKE-UP POLICY:            Make up tests will not be given.  If you miss one test, the grades you have will be averaged with no penalty.  If you miss more than one test, you will receive a 0 for the test missed.

 

 

GRADING POLICY:            The grading system is:

 

A = 90-100                 Excellent

B = 80-89                   Good

C = 70-79                   Fair

D = Below 70 Failing, must repeat

 

If a student or a class does not finish the material needed to complete this level, they will be changed to an audit status.  They will receive a grade of @AU@.  The student will need to enroll in the same level and pay for the classes again the next semester. This action could cause problems with financial aid.
