COURSE SYLLABUS ESL 0321

 

 

COURSE NAME/NUMBER/TITLE:     ESL 0321, Speaking & Listening II

 

 

HOURS:        Five (5) hours of class and one (1) hour of lab per week.  Additional time outside of class will be necessary to complete assignments.

 

SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS:     Three (3) semester hours, institutional credit.

 

 

DISABILITY STATEMENT:

 

Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact ACcessibility Services (SSC 125) Phone 371-5436 as soon as possible.

                                   

REQUIRED EXAMINATION:        Written and oral examinations in class and lab evaluating vocabulary and aural/oral skills.  A final exam is also required.     

 

PREREQUISITE:    Completion of ESL 0311, Speaking and Listening I, with a grade of C or better or approval of ESL faculty.

 

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:     

 

Speaking and Listening II will build on vocabulary and skills learned in Level I and      emphasize practical ideas and idiomatic speech as used in day-to-day life.

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:      

 

To increase students' vocabulary and aural/oral fluency so they can converse in everyday situations.  To increase students= abilities in listening, comprehension  and pronunciation.  To enable students to recognize common idioms.

 

 

PERFORMANCE /LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

 

1.         Identify and use long and short vowel sounds.

 

2.         Improve English vocabulary.

 

3.         Talk about daily routines and schedules.

 

4.         Talk about current events.

 

5.         Learn to use time expressions.

 

6.         Learn to give and listen for directions.

 

7.         Learn to explain problems and request help.

 

8.         Learn to use comparatives and superlatives.

 

9.         Practice describing people, places, and things of interest.

 

10.       Learn to recognize common idioms.

 

11.       Discuss memories of the past, feelings about the present, and plans for the future.

 

 

ATTENDANCE:       Attendance is essential to success in the class; therefore, limit absences to no more than 5 a semester.  Additional absences can affect your final grade in the class.  If you stop attending class and do not formally withdraw, you will receive an F.

 

EVALUATION:         Written and Oral Unit Examinations                        1/2 of Final Grade

Lab Grade and Participation                                   1/4 of Final Grade

                                    Final Examination                                                     1/4 of Final Grade

 

MAKE-UP POLICY:            Make up tests will not be given.  If you miss one test, the grades you have will be averaged with no penalty.  If you miss more than one test, you will receive a 0 for the test missed.

 

GRADING POLICY:            The grading system is:

 

A = 90-100                             Excellent

B = 80-89                               Good

C = 70-79                               Fair

D = Below 70                         Failing, must repeat

 

 


If a student or a class does not finish the material needed to complete this level, they will be changed to an audit status.  They will receive a grade of AAU@.  The student will need to enroll in the same level and pay for the classes again the next semester.  This action could cause problems with financial aid.
