COURSE SYLLABUS ESL 0315

 

 

COURSE NAME/NUMBER/TITLE:         ESL 0315,  Composition I

 

 

HOURS:        Five (5) hours of class and one (1) hour of lab per week.  Additional time outside of class will be necessary to complete assignments.

 

 

SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS:   Three (3) semester hours, institutional credit.

 

 

DISABILITY STATEMENT:

 

Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact ACcessibility Services (SSC125) Phone 371-5436 as soon as possible.

 

                                   

REQUIRED EXAMINATION:        Written and oral examinations in class evaluating writing skills and the application of grammar rules.  A final exam is also required.                               

 

 

PREREQUISITE:    Must know the English alphabet and be literate in first language.                                                         

 

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:      Writing simple sentences, controlled paragraphs, and narrative paragraphs.

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:     

 

To enable students to communicate in writing using simple sentences.  To enable students to recognize parts of a sentence, correct spelling, capitalization, and beginning punctuation.

 

 

 


PERFORMANCE /LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

 

1.         Identify nouns.

 

2.         Identify verbs.

 

3.         Identify adjectives.

 

4.         Identify adverbs.

 

5.         Write sentences with statement and question punctuation.        

 

6.         Write sentences using capitalization rules.

 

7.         Write sentences with correct subject - verb agreement.

 

8.         Recognize a complete sentence with a subject, verb, capital letter,

end-mark, and complete thought.

 

 

ATTENDANCE:       Attendance is essential to success in the class; therefore, limit absences to no more than 5 per semester.  Additional absences can affect your final grade in the class.  If you stop attending class and do not formally withdraw, you will receive an F.

 

EVALUATION:         Objective Examinations                                           1/2 of Final Grade

In-class Writings and Participation                        1/4 of Final Grade

Final Examination                                                     1/4 of Final Grade  

 

MAKE-UP POLICY:            Make up tests will not be given.  If you miss one test, the grades you have will be averaged with no penalty.  If you miss more than one test, you will receive a 0 for the test missed.

 

GRADING POLICY:            The grading system is:

 

A = 90-100                             Excellent

B = 80-89                               Good

C = 70-79                               Fair

D = Below 70                         Failing, must repeat

 

If a student or a class does not finish the material needed to complete this level, they  will be changed to an audit status.  They will receive a grade of AAU@.  The student will need to enroll in the same level and pay for the classes again the next semester.  This action could cause problems with financial aid.
