COURSE SYLLABUS ESL 0314
COURSE NAME/NUMBER/TITLE: ESL
0314, Reading I
HOURS: Five (5) hours of class and one (1)
hour of lab per week. Additional time
outside of class will be necessary to complete assignments.
SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS: Three (3)
semester hours, institutional credit.

REQUIRED EXAMINATIONS: Written
and oral examinations in class evaluating vocabulary and comprehension
skills. A final exam is also required.
PREREQUISITE: Must know
the English alphabet and be literate in first language.
DESCRIPTION OF COURSE: Emphasis
on vocabulary building, word attack skills, and reading comprehension.

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:
To assist students in learning the
sounds of the English alphabet and how the sounds relate to the vocabulary
introduced. To assist students in comprehending several simple sentences on the
same subject.
PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Recognize
letters of the alphabet and their sounds.
2. Learn
the vowels and their sounds.
3. Assist
students in putting letter sounds together to make words.
4. Assist
students in writing and spelling words.
5. Assist
students in reading and comprehending short stories.
ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is essential to success
in the class; therefore, limit absences to no more than 5 a semester. Additional absences can affect your
final grade in the class. If you
stop attending class and do not formally withdraw, you will receive an F.

MAKE-UP POLICY:
Make-up tests will not be
given. If you miss one test, the grades
you have will be averaged with no penalty.
If you miss more than one test, you will receive a 0 for the test
missed.
GRADING POLICY: The
grading system is:
A = 90-100 Excellent
B = 80-89 Good
C = 70-79 Fair
D = 60-69 Failing
If a student or a class does not
finish the material needed to complete this level, they will be changed to an
audit status. They will receive a grade
of AAU@. The student
will need to enroll in the same level and pay for the classes again the next
semester. This action could cause
problems with financial aid.
