What has been termed in the past “The Sport of Kings,” the art and science of fencing, is taught right here in Amarillo at Amarillo College. In fact the AC Fencing Program is the oldest and largest certified fencing program in the region, providing three separate distinct classes with two certified coaches and five Junior Olympian teaching assistants. Fencing classes have been offered through the Leisure Studies - Continuing Education for the last ten years. The teaching staff are all members of the Amarillo College Fencing Association which provide their services free of charge to Amarillo College to insure a program of the highest quality at the lowest possible costs to participating students. The AC instructional staff are: Head Coach - Richard Howard, Coach - Chuck Slaughter, Coach - Josh Evans, Teaching Assistants - Noah Burner, Alex Laugesen, Ben Simpson, and Danny Tickner. The AC Fencing Program has been complimented by the United States Fencing Association at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, the United States Fencing Coaches Association, and professional coaches and athletes from across the Nation on numerous occasions as one of the finest and least expensive fencing training facilities in the country. Most fencing centers charge monthly rates as well as hourly fees for one-on-one lessons. At Amarillo College students pay a single course registration fee of $40.00 per semester. The physical venue facilities (Russell Hall 104 on the Amarillo College Washington Street Campus) are the envy of many fencing centers across the country. AC Fencing Association fencers make up the advanced class and competition fencing team. They proudly represent Amarillo College from coast to coast. Quite literally the Amarillo College fencing program is well known from Stanford to Yale. Just recently Amarillo College had the great pleasure and distinction of hosting three time world men's foil champion Sergei Golubitsky who now lives and teaches in Italy. The Amarillo College Fencing Association flew him in for the event which was attended by fencers and coaches from across the Nation. Amarillo College has always stood for integrity and academic excellence and the fencing program is just another example of this fine tradition. |
